Why New Year’s Resolutions Often Fail

This morning, during my 7 Days of Live Videos, I touched on New Year’s resolutions. Here’s my take: on the surface, most resolutions are empty. They’re promises made without plans or support, destined to fizzle out.

Let’s break it down.

If your resolution is, “I want to get in better shape and focus on my health,” what does that actually mean? Do you want to lose 20 pounds? Run a 10K? Deadlift 400 pounds? Vague goals lead to vague results.

The same applies to writing. Saying, “I want to write a book,” is worlds apart from declaring, “I will write and publish a book this year.”

That’s why I believe New Year’s declarations are far more powerful than resolutions.

Here’s an example from my own life:
“I want to develop a healthier relationship with money.”
Sounds nice, but it’s too vague to be actionable. Now, compare it to this:
“I will earn $150,000 through my job and business in 2025.”

That’s a declaration. It’s specific, measurable, and actionable.

(Side note: Writing that number down scares me. But it’s also a reflection of my truth.)

Now, you might think that as a coach, I’d be a big advocate for New Year’s resolutions. In reality, I’m not. Resolutions without firm goals, solid plans, and a reliable support system? They’re just empty talk.

That’s why so many people who start hitting the gym in January disappear by St. Patrick’s Day.

Now, let’s revisit the common resolution, “I want to write a book, but I don’t know how.”

Here’s what I’d ask you:

  • Do you know what your book will be about? If not, we’ll uncover that together.
  • Who is your intended reader? If you’re unsure, let’s define your audience.
  • How much time can you commit to writing each day?
  • Who will help you market your book?
  • What story are you longing to tell?

Few things stifle progress more than a lack of clarity. But specificity and intention? They’re your greatest allies, guiding you through the process of creating your dream book.

And don’t underestimate the power of a strong support system. It’s often the key that unlocks the door to your success.

Here’s my offer: Before March, I’m scheduling ten free possibility calls with aspiring authors. These calls are no-obligation and designed to help you uncover your voice and share the story of what tried to break you.

Because I believe ordinary people have extraordinary stories to tell.

Let me help you tell yours.

The world is waiting to be moved by your voice.
